Things
I’ve been waffling on posting things in my personal life to my comic blog, or creating a portfolio site with a blog attached to it and dumping it there, or whatever.
I have this Tumblr - I may as well make some use of it. Instead of it being like a sketchbook, I think it’s going to be like a journal of sorts. A place to put random stuff that I can’t fit into neat little boxes....

What a difference a year makes.
I started this Tumblr last year around this time as a place to showcase some of my work. I had some other pursuits like my webcomic (El Cuervo) and my continued writing for my tutorial blog (idrawdigital.)
Over 365 days later, I’ve rebooted the comic and scaled down on the blog posts to the point where I send out link posts once a month showcasing various webcomics I like. One of these...

Hey. How have you been?
I’ve quickly realized that I don’t post here as often as I probably should. This is supposed to be my personal blog, a place where I can vent, share, bestow pride and gloat all at the same time - yet, seven months ago (from the time of this writing) I stopped.
I was in a different mindset. I had a bunch of things circling around my head like a planetary system, and me at the center,...

Kick em when they're up, Kick em when they're...
Life has a real funny way of showing you it loves you by treating you miserably and showing back up at your doorstep with flowers and apologies. It can be an abusive relationship at times, and you stick it out because you feel trapped. Now before you start thinking I’m going to end it all because the burdens of life are getting me down, that’s NOT what I mean in the slightest. In fact,...

When it's quiet, that's usually when kids are...
At least, that’s how my mom used to put it. Every time I’d be playing, making a shit load of racket, breaking stuff, making someone cry, etc. the minute there was silence, she’d rush to where I currently was because I had figured out that in order to do something ‘bad’ I had to be sneaky about it. Being sneaky generally means being quiet.
So I’ve been quiet....
Crisis Averted
Sorry for the lack of updates in the comic saga. I figured out how to skirt the Grendel issue. The more I look at the story, the less it mirrors Grendel, so I’m not too worried about that.
I did however, change the title. I wanted to keep my character’s name, but after additional research, I’ve made some alterations to that as well.
For now, the series is going to be known as...
Inadvertent Unoriginality
Have you ever worked on something for a long time, then think you had an original idea, only to realize that your idea was already successful elsewhere in the same genre, and you feel like an idiot because you SHOULD have known about it.
You also don’t want to run the risk of looking unoriginal, but you also don’t want to run the risk of looking ignorant either.
So this webcomic...

The Mechanic
I’ve been wrenching on my site (idrawdigital) for a little while now. I’ve been finding that the traffic has been relatively steady, but people seem to check it out, say “hmm that’s pretty cool.’ and then take off, never to return.
I need to change that. I can make all the tutorials and how to guides I want, but if there’s nothing compelling to keep people...
Wrote until my fingers bled
… or is that typed until they bled? Either way, I’ve been putting some notes together for that book I want to put out this month, featuring some of my tutorials from idrawdigital. Basically I’m giving it away for free, to see how many people are actually interested in what I’ve had to say.
I’ve realized that I’ve been at this blogging thing for over a year....
...and more junk
So this was supposed to be a continuation of my junk dump, but since my scanner doesn’t seem to want to comply with Windows 7, I’m only able to post up some leftovers.
Another ambitious project - the Trojan War. Didn’t make it much further than 6 pages. This was one of the few I salvaged.
I’m still working on this one. It’s a chronicle of all the tall tales I...
Toot! Toot!
I’ve been working on a pile of tutorials for my main blog idrawdigital, and I just completed the second part of the ‘Action Pose Tutorial’ which has taken a while to produce. It’s worth it - people have been giving me some praise for some good content.
I’m still writing the tutorial book I plan on giving away to the loyal readers who decide to sign up for my blog...

Re-hashes
Since this is technically supposed to be like a digital sketchpad, I should probably post up some previous work.
Check it out…
I love this series of panels - I had started TDH as a widescreen format, but kept tinkering with it until I found a layout I liked. These two panels were the only ones that made the cut.
I tend to pencil out and thumbnail a lot of my work, make notes and...
It's slowly getting there...
I’ve been plugging away at some pencils here (really rough) for The Devil’s Hand. The initial drawings I was unhappy with have been reworked and I’ve decided that since this is going to be delivered as a webcomic, I’m going to make it one big long freakin scrolling comic. I saw the idea used over at What Things Do, so I’m going to adopt it.
I’m enjoying the...
I've been working
I can’t believe how busy its been since the holidays.
My wife was in a wedding party, and I was sort of on call to help out with a number of things, meaning last minute hands-on type stuff. I designed the wedding invites, and some other items for the winter wedding. Although I didn’t really draw the design myself, it was modified from a piece the couple liked online.
The wedding was...

Can't make up my mind...
The torment of the artist - never satisfied with his/her own work, never ending in their search for perfection in their craft.
I just started reading this:
and I haven’t gotten too far into it, but Bradstreet talks about how he strictly does covers after being bit on the ass with a sequentials job he was working on. Now I can fully understand why his cover work is so detailed. it would...
Venice (completed)
Here’s the update: I actually finished this on time (before Christmas eve), printed it on a nice textured paper, framed it, wrapped it (well, my wife did),then presented it to my folks on the 24th.
It was a hit.
It’s one of the first pieces I’ve ever created for my folks. That actually saddens me a bit - I’ve been a professional artist for 15 years and I’ve never...
Venice (partial)
This is a sample of a larger pic I’m drawing for my folks as a Christmas present. Its a view from one of the bridges overlooking the waterways in Venice.
I’m only about half done. I really have to start moving on this before I deliver it on the 24th… if you need me, you’ll know where I’ll be.
In technicolor...
I think I might give it the colour treatment. I’ve been reading way too many mainstream comics with their fancy colour work and effects.
Plus, when I look at Bradstreet’s work on P-Max and some of the White Wolf stuff, it just gives it more life. The process might take longer, but the end result is absolutely wicked.
I’ve never been one to keep to a quick sched with comics,...
In the City
So here’s some inks… still WIP.
It’s getting there. I’m much more satisfied with this. Perhaps a grey wash of some sort is in order. We’ll see…
We built this city...
ON RAWK AND RO-OOOHHHHLL
Fuck the cartoony method for the sake of speed. I’m going back to old school fundamentals. I can still crank out stuff I’m happy with, that has style and realism. This is my pet project after all.
Not like any of the old stuff will go to waste - they make good storyboards.
So that pic - a city I fashioned out of some beauty photog work of NYC. Just changed...
Not so happy
Yeah - I’m not liking the direction of the comic. It just feels too hokey. I wanted to shift the style to something simpler so I could rattle it off faster and get it out there - but its been nagging me for the last year and a bit.
Today I decided I’m going back to my roots and doing the noir photorealistic style (a la Bradstreet) like I intended. I will update you on the further...
Boourns to Slow Intarnets
So tonight we have some freakish weather - it plays havoc with the stuffs on my intarnets, so I can’t gets nothin’ done.
I suppose I could finish coloring page 6, but its Thursday and I’m lazy and I’m off work tomorrow. But I still have to get up early for a dentist appointment, so attach a boourns on to that as well. Then I have to lug all the Christmas decorations...
TDH Update and a New Rig
Okay - 6 pages inked. Once I get the color (greys) laid and the narrative placed, I’m good to go on the release of the first episode.
It’s been a long time coming. I’m looking forward to finally getting up and going.
In other news, I finally bought that rig I’ve been wanting. I never buy anything fun for myself - I think its a subliminal guilt complex to keep me...

Behind schedule
So there comes a time when you just have to let loose a little and free yourself from the confines of the 9 to 5 prison. I attended a bachelor party on the weekend, and I quickly realized that drinking so much isn’t always a good idea.
My liver reminded me to act my age. My headache enforced that rule.
Needless to say, nothing got done over the weekend. I’m sorta juggling a number of...
sneak peek
I roughed out a few pages for Irrelevant last night, but couldn’t get into a writing groove - far too many distractions last night.
Here’s a sneak peek at the first episode of The Devil’s Hand.
Back to writing...
I’ve decided to start writing out the scripts to Irrelevant (working title) which is my next comic. Once I’m done playing around with Tumblr, that is.
There’s a rough sketchpad drawing I was messing around with initially. I wasn’t going to start this, but I left the pages I was rendering for The Devil’s Hand at the office - so I’m going to put my productive...
